For a long time, Unai Simón was the goalkeeper people remembered for one moment. A backpass rolled under his foot against Croatia at Euro 2020, and for years that clip followed him around like a shadow. He kept playing anyway. In July 2026 he lifted the World Cup in New York, having conceded a single goal in eight matches.
That is a rare thing in football: a reputation rewritten in one summer. It also raises questions that matter more now than they did a year ago. What is he worth? Could anyone actually buy him? And who is the man who deleted his social media and almost never talks about himself?

Lezama, Elche and a Sudden Vacancy
Simón is a one-club man in an age that has almost forgotten what that means. He started at Aurrera Vitoria in his home city before his parents took him to Athletic's academy at Lezama, where he joined at under-14 level. He played 63 games for the B team and went on a single loan, to Elche in 2018, which he cut short.
He came home at exactly the right time. Chelsea had just paid a world record fee for Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Athletic were left without a first-choice keeper. Simón debuted in LaLiga on the opening day of 2018/19 against Leganés under Eduardo Berizzo. He has owned the number one shirt at San Mamés ever since.
Living With the Croatia Clip
His critics were never entirely wrong about the risk. They were wrong about the trade-off.
Spain build from the back. That asks the goalkeeper to receive the ball under pressure inside his own six-yard box and pass through a press. Most of the time it works quietly and nobody notices. When it fails, it fails in front of millions, and the keeper carries the blame alone. Croatia was that failure in its most visible form.
Successive managers kept choosing him because his distribution was worth more to them than the occasional disaster cost. Raya and Joan García both made strong cases with domestic Golden Gloves of their own, but Luis de la Fuente trusted Simón for the World Cup. The tournament answered the debate, at least for now.
Seven Clean Sheets and a Record From 1990
Simón's 2026 World Cup was not merely good. On the numbers, it is the strongest goalkeeping tournament any Spaniard has produced in living memory.
- Seven clean sheets, the most ever by a goalkeeper at a single World Cup.
- One goal conceded in eight matches, the fewest by any eventual champion. Charles De Ketelaere scored it for Belgium in the quarter-final.
- A 91.7 save percentage, the best in the competition.
- 650 consecutive World Cup minutes without conceding, breaking Walter Zenga's 1990 record. The run began after Japan scored against Spain in Qatar in 2022.
- A clean sheet in the final, a 1-0 extra time win over Argentina on July 19, 2026.
What stood out was not only shot stopping. He left his line constantly and attacked crosses, which is exactly what a high defensive line needs from the man behind it.
The club record is steadier than spectacular: well over 250 first-team appearances in eight seasons and more than 80 clean sheets. His best year was 2023/24, with 16 clean sheets, the Zamora Trophy, the Copa del Rey and a Yashin Trophy nomination. A wrist injury from July to November 2024 and an Achilles problem in early 2023 make his season totals look patchy, but that was time on the sidelines, not decline.
What He Earns, and What He Has Kept
Icon Polls estimates Simón's net worth at $22 million to $25 million. He has never disclosed his finances, so that figure is built from career earnings rather than any official number. Some other published estimates sit nearer $12 million because they count only what is visible.
The salary is easier to track. Public databases put his gross pay at roughly 8.33 million euros a year, about 160,000 euros a week, with bonuses of around half a million on top. Close to 25 million euros remains on his deal.
Two things are worth understanding. This is recent money: he was on a modest wage early on and only reached elite pay after becoming first choice for club and country. And he has turned down more. Real Madrid and Inter watched him years ago, and staying in Bilbao almost certainly cost him a bigger contract elsewhere. Spain match fees and tournament bonuses add to the total, along with a small set of endorsements, including a Reusch glove deal and an Adidas relationship. With no social media, he is never going to be a commercial heavyweight.
Why Nobody Can Simply Buy Him
![]()
His market value sits around 22 million euros, with trackers ranging from roughly 20.7 million to 25.3 million. That is what a buying club might pay, not money in his pocket. It was also set before the World Cup, and a 29-year-old Golden Glove winner will not stay valued there for long.
It may not matter. When he extended his contract in May 2024, Athletic deliberately left out a release clause, a direct lesson from losing Kepa. His previous deal had a 50 million euro figure. Now there is no number to trigger. Athletic decide whether he is for sale at all, and Simón has said he does not want to uproot his life in Bilbao.
Two Police Officers and a Deleted Account
![]()
Both of his parents worked in law enforcement. His father, Daniel Simón, from the province of Zamora, served in the Guardia Civil, and his mother was an officer in the Ertzaintza, the Basque regional police. Simón has pushed back on the idea that his calm in goal comes from their work, describing their careers as jobs like any other.
He is not publicly married. He has had the same partner for several years, but he keeps his private life private and has never named her. He deleted his social media accounts early in his career after realising he was absorbing too much of both the praise and the criticism. For a keeper once mocked across the internet, that looks less like aloofness and more like good sense.
