Some footballers get remembered for one great night. Nemanja Gudelj will probably be remembered for seven steady years. When his Sevilla contract ran out on June 30, 2026, the Serbian left as a free agent at 34, closing the most settled chapter of a career that had once looked like it might drift away entirely.
That drift is the interesting part. A decade ago he was a promising midfielder at Ajax who admitted he struggled for motivation when he wasn't starting. That kind of remark can end a career at a big club. Instead, it sent him to China, then to Portugal, then to Spain, where he became exactly the sort of dependable, versatile player coaches love and fans rarely put on posters.

A Dutch education with a family accent
Gudelj was born in Belgrade but grew up in football in the Netherlands. He came through the youth ranks at NAC Breda, the same club where his father, Nebojsa, had played. He broke through as a teenager, and by 2013 AZ Alkmaar paid a reported 3 million euros to take him.
Two years later Ajax came in, with the fee reported at around 5.4 million pounds. On paper it was the natural next step. In practice it was where things wobbled. He reportedly fell out of favour after saying he found it hard to stay motivated as a substitute, was removed from the first team squad, and left for Tianjin Teda in the Chinese Super League in January 2017.
The China years paid the bills
Plenty of European players who moved to China in that era were mocked for chasing money. Gudelj was honest enough not to pretend otherwise, and the numbers explain the decision. His move to Tianjin was reportedly worth around 5.5 million euros, and his spells there and at Guangzhou Evergrande reportedly earned him about 17 million euros over a few seasons. For a player who was never a superstar, that's career-defining money.
He also kept playing regular football, which matters more than people admit. A loan to Sporting CP in Portugal followed, and it put him back in front of European scouts at the right moment.
Why Sevilla kept picking him

Sevilla signed him on a free transfer in 2019, and he stayed seven seasons. He was part of the squad that won the Europa League in 2020, still the biggest trophy of his career, and he remained a regular in La Liga right through 2025/2026.
The reason is simple: he solves problems. At 1.87 m he wins headers, and coaches have trusted him to anchor midfield one week and drop into central defence the next. His frame is lean for the role, but he uses it well in physical duels. A player who can cover two positions without fuss is worth more to a squad than his highlights reel suggests.
His international record backs that up. He has represented Serbia at senior level since 2014, earned more than 75 caps and went to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The money, with the caveats
Gudelj's last Sevilla deal, signed in June 2023 and running to June 30, 2026, was reportedly worth 15 million euros over three years. That works out at a reported base of around 4 million euros a year, with bonuses possibly lifting it towards 5 million, or roughly 77,000 euros a week. That placed him among the club's better paid players, though not at the very top.
Icon Polls estimates Nemanja Gudelj's net worth at $40 million to $45 million in 2026. Treat that as a rough estimate, not a statement of fact. There's no official figure, and our number is built from reported contracts in the Netherlands, China and Spain plus any endorsement income. Reported wages are usually gross, so taxes, agents and living costs mean the real figure could sit lower. What's clear is that the China years and a long Sevilla stay made him a wealthy man by any normal standard.
His market value is another story. Football data platforms put it at around 2 million to 2.5 million euros in early 2026, which is what happens to any midfielder in his mid thirties. Across his career, reported transfer fees for him add up to roughly 14 million euros or more, a respectable total for a player who rarely made headlines.
Belgrade roots, a footballing household
Gudelj comes from a sporting family. His father Nebojsa played professionally and later worked as a manager and scout. His younger brother Dragisa is also a footballer, and his sister Vanja plays tennis.
He keeps his private life fairly quiet, though his marriage drew attention in Serbia. His wife, Anastasija Raznatovic, is a singer and model and the daughter of the singer Ceca. The couple married in 2023 in a low-key ceremony, which suits a player whose public image has always been understated.
The same goes for his look. Short, dark hair, no dramatic reinventions. Nobody has ever talked about Gudelj's style more than his tackling, and he seems fine with that.
What comes after Sevilla?
A free agent at 34 with Champions League and Europa League experience, a World Cup on his record and the ability to play two positions is not short of uses. Whether he chooses one more top flight season, a final payday elsewhere or a move closer to home, his reputation as a reliable professional should open doors. If a new club has been announced since the summer, check official club channels for the details.
He's a useful reminder that football careers aren't only built by stars. If you've got opinions on who really deserves the spotlight, have your say on the best football players of all time and see how your picks compare.
