Can Peque Turn 18 Second Tier Goals Into a Sevilla Career? Gerard Fernandez at 24 (2026)

Two days ago Gerard Fernandez turned 24. That birthday lands at an awkward point for a forward. He is too old to be called a prospect forever and too young to be written off, and his record so far sits between two stories. In one he is the kid who scored 18 goals in a season for Racing Santander. In the other he is the Sevilla attacker who managed 2 in La Liga last season. Which story wins depends on what happens next.

Most people know him as Peque, Spanish for "little one", and the nickname suits a 1.72 m attacker whose game is built on low balance and quick feet rather than physical presence.

From L'Hospitalet to La Masia, twice

L'Hospitalet sits right against Barcelona's city limits, so it isn't surprising that football found him early. He joined Cornella's youth setup in 2011, aged nine. Barcelona took him into La Masia in 2014, and two years later he was back at Cornella. Plenty of boys never get a second look after leaving that academy. He did.

Barcelona brought him back in 2019, and he scored on his Barcelona B debut against Villarreal B. It was a good start, but the first team at that club is famously hard to reach. When his contract ran out in 2022, he left.

Racing Santander, where it clicked

Moving to Racing Santander in the Segunda Division was the smartest call of his career so far. At Barcelona he was one academy forward among many. At Racing he was the player the attack ran through. In 2023 to 2024 he was the club's top scorer with 18 goals in 33 matches, and that is serious production in a second tier that is known for being physical and stingy.

Sevilla noticed. On July 10, 2024, the club announced an agreement with Racing for his signing, reportedly by paying his release clause of around 4 million euros. He signed a four year deal running to June 2028.

The step up nobody finds easy

Second division goals don't always carry over, and Peque's first seasons in La Liga have shown that. He has also arrived at a difficult time. Sevilla have been going through a rough period, and an unsettled team is a hard place for a young attacker to find rhythm. Several coaches have tried him in different roles: shadow striker, pressing forward, even box to box midfielder. That says something good about his versatility. It also suggests nobody has settled on his best position.

Reading the 2025 to 2026 numbers

  • Appearances: 26, with 12 starts
  • Minutes: 978
  • Goals and assists: 2 goals, 1 assist
  • Shots: 11, about 36 percent on target
  • Discipline: 8 yellow cards, no reds, 15 fouls committed
  • Average match rating: around 6.7 out of 10, with a season best of 8.1 against Real Betis

In plain terms, that is a little under 1,000 minutes, which works out to roughly eleven full matches spread across 26 appearances. He was a rotation player, not a starter. Two goals from eleven shots isn't a disastrous conversion rate. The real problem is volume: he isn't getting the ball in shooting positions often enough. Eight yellows in under a thousand minutes stands out too. Some of that is the price of pressing hard, but it is a lot.

The Betis performance is worth remembering. Doing well in the Seville derby counts for more with Sevilla fans than any average rating.

What the market thinks now

His value has moved in a curve. Sevilla paid around 4 million euros, and valuation platforms pushed him to a peak of roughly 7.4 million euros in January 2025. As of 2026, estimates range from 4.9 million to 6.6 million euros, with 5.8 million the figure quoted most often.

So he is still worth more than Sevilla paid, but less than at his peak. Icon Polls thinks he could pass 10 million euros within two or three seasons if his scoring improves. That is a real "if". He needs a regular role and a return to something like his Racing form to get there.

Money: estimates, not payslips

His salary has never been officially disclosed. Sevilla's total wage bill for 2025 to 2026 is reported at around 72 million euros, and Peque is not among the top earners such as Marcao or Djibril Sow. Icon Polls estimates his annual salary at $500,000 to $1 million, and his net worth at $3 million to $6 million, based on his wages, his transfer and other likely income. Read both as informed estimates, not confirmed numbers.

A small frame by design

At 5 ft 8 in and about 66 kg, he won't win many aerial duels against La Liga centre backs. His game is about something else. A low centre of gravity helps him turn in tight spaces, dribble through traffic and find pockets between the lines, in the tradition of the classic Spanish attacking midfielder. He is right footed and most comfortable drifting inside rather than holding up play.

Spain, eventually?

He has played for Spain at youth level. He was called up to the Under 18 side for a friendly against Denmark in February 2020 and joined the Under 21 setup in 2024. He has no senior cap yet, and given how deep Spain's attacking options are, a call up will only come after a long run of consistent top flight form. At 24, there is still time for that.

Off the pitch

Very little is known, and that seems to be his choice. There is no confirmed information about a marriage or a public relationship, and he doesn't use social media to share his private life. Icon Polls will respect that.
