Most academy stories are about loyalty. Federico Dimarco's is about rejection, and what a player does with it. Inter took him in at seven, handed him a senior debut at 17, then sold him to a Swiss club for a reported fee of around €3.9 million. A year later they paid roughly €5 million to bring him back, and still sent him out on loan. Today that same player is valued at about €50 million and is one of the most dangerous left-sided defenders in Europe.
He's also approaching the final months of his contract. That makes 2026 a good moment to look at what Dimarco earns, what he's worth and why his next deal matters so much to Inter.

A Boyhood Fan From Porta Romana
Dimarco grew up in Milan's Porta Romana area, the son of two Milan-born parents whose families trace back to Basilicata and Puglia. Before Inter, he played for Calvairate. Then the club he already supported brought him into its youth system, and he worked his way through every age group.
His first-team debut came in December 2014, a Europa League match against Qarabag. For most teenagers that would be the start of a steady climb. For Dimarco it was the start of a long detour.
Sold for €3.9 Million, Bought Back for €5 Million
Regular football simply wasn't available at Inter, so he went on loan to Ascoli and then Empoli. In 2017 Inter let him go permanently to Sion in Switzerland. It looked like the end of the story.
It wasn't. Inter reportedly paid around €5 million to re-sign him in 2018, a quiet admission that they'd sold too early. Even then he wasn't ready to start, so there were further spells at Parma and Hellas Verona.
Here's the honest read: those years were frustrating, but they made him. Each club asked something different of him, whether that was defending in scrappy relegation battles or learning to pick the right moment to attack.
Verona Changed Everything
The Verona loan was the turning point. He played regularly, tightened up his defending and showed he could shape Serie A matches rather than simply survive them. Inter recalled him for 2021/22, and this time he stayed.
He didn't walk straight into the side, but he became first choice within a few seasons. Since then he has won the Scudetto, Coppa Italia titles and Italian Super Cups with Inter and played in Champions League finals. He also made his senior Italy debut in 2022 and has become a regular in the national team, where his delivery gives the side a different option on the left.
What the Left Foot Does
Dimarco isn't tall for a defender, and it doesn't matter. His game lives in his left foot. He crosses early, drills low balls across the six-yard box, takes corners and free kicks, and shoots from distances that most full-backs wouldn't consider.
The technique gets the highlights. The movement is what coaches value. He knows when to hold the width, when to overlap and when to drift inside, which helps Inter build overloads down the left. Without the ball, he drops back into the line and tracks runners.
In 2025/26 his output went up another level. He produced a record number of assists for a defender in Serie A, which tells you how central he has become to Inter's attack. Our view: few wing-backs anywhere combine that creative threat with his tactical discipline.

The Pay Packet, As Best We Can Tell
Dimarco signed his current extension in December 2023, calling Inter the team in his heart. Icon Polls estimates his gross salary for 2026/27 at about €7.41 million, or roughly €142,500 a week before tax and bonuses. Football salaries come from reporting and payroll estimates, so read that as a well-grounded estimate, not a payslip.
On net worth, Icon Polls estimates a range of $27 million to $30 million. That figure is based on his contracts, reported career earnings, bonuses, endorsement potential and years at the top level. His private finances have never been published, and there's no official number.
The contrast with his early career is sharp. A decade ago he was a young loanee trying to prove he belonged. Now he's one of the club's most valuable assets.
Giulia, Chloe and Nicholas
Dimarco is married to Giulia Mazzocato. They were together long before the wedding and built a family while his career was still unsettled. Their daughter Chloe was born in 2018 and their son Nicholas in 2021.
The couple married in June 2023 in Savelletri, Puglia. Dimarco has said he wanted a seaside ceremony and that Giulia did much of the planning. She keeps a lower profile than her husband, appearing in family photos and at Inter celebrations, but the pair don't turn their home life into content. After years of moving between clubs, that stability seems to matter to him.
June 2027 Is Closer Than It Looks
The contract runs to 30 June 2027. At the time of writing we have no confirmed renewal to report, and no confirmed transfer either. With a valuation around €50 million and a style that suits any team using attacking full-backs, interest from abroad is predictable. Clubs outside Italy have been linked with him before.
Still, the real question isn't whether Dimarco is good enough to leave. It's whether Inter will offer a deal that reflects his importance. Given his history with the club, a renewal looks realistic. Letting a home-grown starter reach the final year and walk would be a strange ending to a story Inter already got wrong once.
Where does he rank among the game's great left-footed talents? That's a debate for fans, so have your say in our vote for the best football players of all time.
