Can Edin Terzic's Dortmund Fire Survive the Move to Bilbao? Age, Family and Net Worth (2026)

Very few coaches have left a club on the back of a Champions League final and then disappeared for almost two years. Edin Terzic did. He walked away from Borussia Dortmund in June 2024, spent the time at home with his family, and resurfaced in May 2026 with a job almost nobody saw coming: head coach of Athletic Club in Bilbao.

That makes this a good moment to look at him properly. Some see him as a Dortmund romantic who got lucky. Others see a serious coach who was never given enough credit. The truth sits somewhere in between, and his first season in La Liga will tell us a lot about which side is closer.

A Late Bloomer From Menden

Terzic grew up in Menden, about half an hour from Dortmund, the son of parents who had emigrated from Yugoslavia. He holds both German and Croatian citizenship.

As a player he was honest about his ceiling. He was a forward in Germany's lower divisions between 2003 and 2013, turning out for Westfalia Herne, SG Wattenscheid 09, BV Cloppenburg and Borussia Droschede. Football helped pay for his studies. The studies, Sports Science at Ruhr University Bochum, turned out to matter more. He earned his coaching badges along the way and eventually the UEFA Pro Licence.

The Bilic Years

His professional route started inside Dortmund's academy, where he worked as a scout and assistant from 2010 to 2013. That was the Jurgen Klopp era, and it is impossible to watch a Terzic side without seeing the influence of that environment.

Then came a detour that shaped him more than people realise. He joined Slaven Bilic's staff, first at Besiktas in Turkey and then at West Ham United in the Premier League from 2015 to 2017. When Bilic was sacked in November 2017, Terzic headed home, rejoining Dortmund in 2018 as an assistant to Lucien Favre.

December 2020

When Favre was sacked in December 2020, Terzic was handed the job on an interim basis. Expectations were low. He finished the season by lifting the DFB-Pokal, beating RB Leipzig in the final.

Dortmund still went for Marco Rose that summer, and Terzic moved into a technical director role rather than leaving. It looked like a demotion. A year later, with Rose gone, he was back in the dugout as permanent head coach from May 2022.

Two Seasons That Hurt

His second spell produced two of the most painful near misses of recent German football. In 2023, Dortmund went into the final day in control of the title race and still lost the Bundesliga to Bayern Munich on goal difference. A season later he took them to the Champions League final at Wembley, where Real Madrid won.

The fair reading is mixed. Reaching a European final with that squad was a genuine achievement. Losing a title from that position was a genuine failure. Both happened on his watch, and both belong in any honest assessment.

In June 2024 he asked to leave, saying the club's new chapter deserved a fresh face. He described the decision as extremely difficult, with two hearts beating in his chest.

How His Teams Play

Terzic football is not subtle, and it isn't meant to be. His sides press high, try to win the ball back quickly and attack directly once they have it. He is loud and animated on the touchline, and he asks for total commitment from everyone.

His real gift may be emotional rather than tactical. Dortmund supporters trusted him because they could see he was one of them. That kind of bond is hard to manufacture, and it is exactly what he will need to build from scratch in a new country.

Why Bilbao Fits, and Why It Might Not

Athletic Club appointed him in May 2026 to replace Ernesto Valverde, on a two-year deal. On paper the match makes sense. The club's famous policy of building around players with Basque roots creates a squad with a strong identity, and San Mamés is one of the loudest grounds in Spain. A coach who thrives on connection and intensity should feel at home.

The risks are just as clear. It is his first job outside Germany and his first in La Liga, he spent almost two years away from management, and he cannot buy his way out of problems the way bigger clubs can. Language will matter too. He speaks German and English, and is expected to learn Spanish on the job.

Home Life

Terzic is married to Kora Wolm, whom he met while both were students at Ruhr University Bochum. They married in 2013 and have two children. Beyond that he keeps his family out of public view, which is entirely his right.

He has spoken about what his sabbatical meant: the chance to say yes to his wife and children, and to experience life outside the 90 minutes. By his own account, it recharged him. His father, Ibrisim, died in October 2022, in the middle of that tense title race, and Terzic shared a heartfelt tribute at the time. His brother Alen works as a scout at Dortmund.

What the Money Looks Like

There is no official figure for Terzic's wealth. Reports during his time as Dortmund head coach put his salary at around 1 million euros per year, and his Athletic Club wage has not been made public.

Icon Polls estimates his net worth at $12 million to $15 million, based on his coaching salaries at Dortmund, his assistant years at Besiktas and West Ham, and his new contract in Spain. Treat that as a rough guide rather than a hard number. He is not a coach associated with luxury headlines, and nothing about his public life suggests otherwise.
